The continuing growth of air, rail and road travel on both a local and an international level has highlighted the need to raise the efficiency of our transport infrastructure. Good quality transport buildings should provide convenient public access to these services in a safe, comfortable, well managed environment.
Buro Happold has been involved with the design and construction of many major transport hubs over the years, including airport terminals, railway and bus stations, depots and underground stations. Many of these projects have formed an integral part of regeneration schemes in run-down urban areas.
In the competitive airport sector, we understand the commercial and physical design criteria which drive the industry. With many airports expanding their facilities to meet rising demand, our landside and airside projects have included passenger terminal buildings, retail areas, piers, baggage handling systems, hotels, offices and car parks.
Through our framework agreement with BAA we have worked on major schemes at Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted such as the re-development of Heathrow’s Terminal 3. Other high profile projects have ranged from a new £300m flagship HQ for British Airways to designs for private airfields, including a striking new ATC centre, terminal building and hangar at Farnborough.
On the railway, we have designed new ticket halls and roof structures at Waterloo, Hounslow, Ashford and Dresden and provided structural engineering for London Underground’s massive Jubilee Line Extension. Our long experience of the transport environment means that work can be carried out with minimal disruption to passenger operations.
