Sport & leisure
The principle of the integration of architectural vision and engineering excellence is fundamental to everything Buro Happold does – a successful building is one that achieves a synthesis of form, function and economy. Our multi-disciplinary approach allows us to deliver innovative and elegant sports venues that exceed the expectations of owners, fans and players.

A modern sports development, such as a stadium, demands particular clarity in its design solutions. Every aspect of the structural configuration has to be consistent with its purpose and functionality: it has to provide safe, all-round viewing for spectators and a quality playing surface for participants, while being aesthetically exciting and commercially viable.

Environmental design of the physical form can have a significant impact on its performance. In a stadium many elements are interlinked: for example, the profile of the roof and the shape of the building envelope determine daylight and sunlight levels, wind loading, vibration and air flow. These factors in turn affect pitch quality and spectator comfort, as well as the overall ‘atmosphere’ in the stadium.

Fire safety and lighting design – which must address the needs of TV broadcast, players and spectators – are also critical factors in determining the design of a sports complex. Our advanced building services systems enable flexible and reliable operation of all parts of the site. ‘Green’ systems such as rainwater tanks and photovoltaic cells help to improve sustainability and reduce energy costs.

To get maximum enjoyment from the event, spectators need to be able to access the complex – and circulate inside it – in comfort and safety. Our transport planners ensure that pedestrian routes to and from the ground are clearly-signposted and safely linked by bridges and subways to roads, car parks and rail stations. To make it easier for people to move around the complex and visit bars, restaurants and other areas, we use people flow modelling to help reduce crowding and queuing at key points.

Buro Happold has extensive experience in the sport and leisure sector. Projects range from major international venues such as stadia, racecourses and Olympic standard skating rinks to smaller community-based sports and leisure facilities including leisure centres, sports academies, swimming pools, health clubs, artificial ski slopes, tennis clubs, golf clubs, bowling alleys and cinemas.
