Wembley Regeneration

The largely industrial land surrounding Wembley’s landmark National Stadium is the site of a large-scale mixed use redevelopment project designed to revitalise the area’s social, economic and environmental wellbeing. Buro Happold was appointed to provide strategic advice as well as a range of multi-disciplinary services including structural and geotechnical engineering, transport planning, traffic engineering and utility provision.

Wembley is one of the first high profile regeneration projects in the UK where the Demolition Protocol was specified in the planning conditions. One of its aims is to re-use landfill ‘rubble’ generated by demolition in the construction of new infrastructure and buildings; roads and hard standings, for example. Following a sustainability assessment, Buro Happold’s environmental consultants set a target of 80% for the proportion of rubble that could be recycled during the first phase of the works.
