Greenside Place Bridge

Greenside Place is a link footbridge built to replace an old bridge crossing Leith Street in Edinburgh and connecting the St James Shopping Centre with Calton Hill. Its futuristic styling in glass with an interlocking helical steel frame makes for a distinctive landmark in the city with spectacular views.

Consisting of a steel lattice shell with an elliptical cross section, the bridge is S-shaped in plan, has a 46m span and weighs 90 tonnes. The shell is built from a series of 60mm diameter solid steel bars, each and has a glazed roof and parapets for sheltering pedestrians.

The bridge's walkway deck is made from lightweight, interlocking extruded aluminium planks and incorporates light-fittings for illumination at night. While the deck's camber provides the correct gradient for water drainage purposes, it has been cleverly designed to appear to be perfectly horizontal.
