Providing a vital crossing over Singapore’s busy Alexandra Road, this dramatic bridge has become a distinctive landmark in the city centre. It brings to life the Singapore Urban Redevelopment Authoriy’s vision of linking Mount Faber, Telok Blangah Hill and Kent Ridge. This challenging project was won in an international design competition organised by the Singaporean government.
Designed for pedestrian use, Alexandra Arch is an asymmetric structure comprising a single leaning arch supporting a curved 80m granite-surfaced deck. Rising 15m above the road, the arch, deck and hanger fins are all fabricated from steel, and the whole assembly is supported by raking concrete piers on piled foundations. The steel armature asserts its structural dynamism during daylight hours and dissolves at dusk into a sculpture of light.
