Buro Happold carried out several major building and engineering projects at Farnborough airport involving the construction of a stylish new air traffic control tower (ATC) as well as an eye-catching hangar and terminal building.
The ATC centre itself comprises a 34m-high tower topped with a visual control room, two-storey accommodation, conference areas and offices for air traffic control tower staff, plus a service plant. The total air traffic tower area covers approximately 1,000m2.
The new 12,500 m2 hangar building is divided into three hangar spaces, each with its own workshop facilities. Two-storey office accommodation and plant spaces are neatly incorporated into the areas between hangars.
The new terminal building, covering approx 4,000m2, includes passenger and crew lounges, reception areas and office accommodation. The striking architecture was designed to mimic an aircraft wing in plan and section.
