Buro Happold believes that taking environmental issues into account is vital when planning any project. The Eastgate Theatre and Arts Centre project showed the clear practical benefits to be gained from this approach. It involved the conversion of a disused 19th century church into a new multi-function arts centre, comprising an auditorium, stage, rehearsal space, changing facilities, cafeteria/bar and kitchen facilities.
A strong environmental agenda ran throughout the brief. Any existing services were stripped out and replaced with energy efficient systems. Utility diversions were carried out as a part of the project. This included the diversion of in-situ electricity, telecom, water and drainage services to allow for the creation of an external seating area and café space. A new gas utility service was installed in the theatre to fuel the new heating system installation. Passive cooling systems were designed for the auditorium space to maximise the energy efficiency of the building. Good disability access to the Eastgate was also paramount.
