Completed in May 2007, the O2 Arena gives a new lease of life to the famous Millennium Dome on Greenwich Peninsula as one of the UK's most exciting and technically advanced music, sport and entertainment destinations.
The O2 Arena provides London with a 23,000 capacity state-of-the-art venue. It is also surrounded by an exciting Entertainment District, which comprises a mixture of leisure attractions, bars, restaurants, cafes and shops. The district also includes the O2 Music Club, with capacity for over 2,000 people, an 1,800 capacity theatre and the O2 exhibition bubble.
Within the confines of the existing Millennium Dome, the O2 Arena measures 152m across. Much of the existing infrastructure was retained, as were the plant cylinders that house services such as electrical switch gear. Existing piles within the floor are also incorporated into the design where possible and appropriate.
In terms of constraints, the biggest single engineering challenge was the overall height limitation. The maximum height of the arena is 47.5m above the current ground level, which meant that the use of high level cranes during construction was impossible.
