Manor Hospital is a state-of-the-art, four-storey private hospital located on the site of the old Oxford United football stadium. It is the result of a strategic decision by Nuffield Hospitals to move from its city centre location to a site close to the John Radcliffe, Warneford, Churchill and Nuffield Orthopaedic hospitals.
Buro Happold worked closely with the client and architect to ensure that the building met sustainability targets and delivered a high quality patient experience. The hospital is structured around two large atria that provide uplifting, light-filled spaces for visitors and staff. ETFE foil cushion roofs were chosen as the roofing material as they provide superior energy-efficient insulation and are extremely long lasting. Our fire engineering team also designed an evacuation strategy.
Dynamic structural analysis was also carried out to ensure that high specification medical equipment would not be affected by vibrations caused by the movement of nurses and doctors around the hospital. Eliminating plant noise from the nearby NHS hospital, bowls club and local housing was a major challenge for the building services team.
