Located on the banks of the Vistula in central Warsaw, the Kopernik Science Centre will cover 15,000m2 and will be the first of its kind in Poland. The complex will include interactive exhibitions, lecture theatres, education laboratories, a multimedia planetarium and children’s play area.
The building features a striking wave design that complements the riverine landscape. Natural daylight will be provided to the internal exhibition spaces through crater-like skylights in the roof.
The centre is situated over an existing tunnel, but will be independent from its structure. One of the challenges of the project is building the museum at a riverside location. Cost-effective construction on fluvial ground was a crucial consideration for the design in order to overcome this. The design also includes solutions to overcome restrictions such as height limits for the buildings, existing infrastructure and creating column-free exhibition space.
