Buro Happold was appointed to develop a multi-services solution for the extension to Jordanhill School in Glasgow. With a history dating back almost 100 years, the school identified a need to expand and modernise while ensuring that the new development integrated with the existing buildings. Following extensive consultation with pupils and staff, it was decided that the improvements should include the construction of a 2,500m
2 teaching block, refurbishment of the existing refectory and the addition of outdoor sports areas, including a synthetic floodlit hockey pitch.
Working closely with Elder & Cannon, Buro Happold’s engineers introduced innovative systems to reduce the school’s carbon footprint. This was achieved by using natural daylighting, crossflow natural ventilation and occupancy detection systems that control lighting to reduce unnecessary energy consumption, while also lower running costs. These solutions aim to reduce carbon emissions by 60% in the new and refurbished buildings compared to the pre-existing ones.
