Buro Happold's Inclusive Design team completed an independent access audit for Historic Scotland, recommending measures to improve the accessibility and enjoyment factor of Scotland's historic properties for the disabled.
The Inclusive Design team audited all the staffed properties in the care of Historic Scotland, ranging from castles, abbeys and priories to distilleries and a lighthouse. These audits identified what specific improvements could be made to allow access to as many properties as possible, taking into account what would be reasonably practical without compromising the historical fabric of the buildings.
The audit team visited each of the sites and examined accessibility and visitors' experiences across landscaping, approach, entry, parking, reception and customer facilities. An assessment of facilities such as induction loops, sound enhancements, tonal contrast, surface finishes, lighting and signage was also carried out.
