Griffeen Valley Primary School

Buro Happold's innovative use of construction materials was a key factor in the design of Griffeen Valley Primary School, which combines the benefits of timber, steel and pre-cast concrete. We provided structural engineering and building services for this 16-classroom primary school, built using a domestic timber frame construction on a fast-track, design and build contract.

The building is naturally ventilated and lit wherever possible, and constructed of materials and components chosen to ensure long life, durability and low maintenance. The irregular form and the planning of the building created a variety of spaces and experiences to stimulate pupils in their primary education years. By careful use of colour, texture and changes of scale, an inspirational and friendly environment has been created. The facilities include a large general purpose room, which can also be used by the local community. Griffeen Valley is a prototype for prefabricated schools, delivered on time and on budget.
