This project involved constructing a new 180m satellite pier at Gatwick Airport, providing full contact stands for up to 12 aircrafts and fully segregated arrival and departure areas. Facilities at the pier include full gate lounges, retail, coaching gates to remote stands and access to the pedestrian bridge link. An elevated walkway linking to the North Terminal offers passengers unparalleled views over the airfield.
Steel framed with a double height space at departures level, the structure provides 4,000m2 of floor area. Stability is provided by a combination of portal frame action and cantilevering columns giving clear sightways both internally and across the airfield.
The terminal's location in the middle of the airfield led to various logistical concerns, including the provision of materials to the site and the safety of the employees working on the project. In order to overcome this, Buro Happold made extensive use of pre-assembled products that were produced off site then set up on the perimeter of the airfield.
