Evelina Children's Hospital

Buro Happold has a wealth of specialist experience in the design of healthcare buildings, adopting a partnership approach with doctors, managers and patients to create the right environment for speedy patient care and recovery.

The NHS children's healthcare facilities are spread over a number of London sites and the purpose of Evelina is to centralise all these paediatric functions under one roof. The design philosophy behind the facility was to create an exciting environment for the children with a large open space formed by the conservatory roof, which serves as a focal communal area to the hospital. The plan shape of the building is irregular; it has a diagonal edge on the west face with a span of approximately 11.6m between columns and a steel diagrid roof. Other design features include a large transfer truss, scenic lifts and a link bridge connecting Evelina to Guy's and St Thomas's.
