Danish National Opera House

This state-of-the-art opera house, situated on the historic island of Dokoen in the Copenhagen harbour, seats 1,400 people. One of the key priorities in the design was the acoustic performance and comfort levels of visitors. Buro Happold supported Danish engineers Ramboll, providing advice on the structural, mechanical and electrical engineering aspects of the design. In addition, we conducted a number of simulations of air movement and comfort using computational fluid dynamics techniques.

Particular challenges included a 35m cantilever roof as well as a number of aerodynamic issues. We investigated vibrations of the auditorium cantilevering balconies under crowd loading, including rhythmic clapping, and tested a range of diffusers, which provide a balance between the volume of acoustic air delivery. We also worked on the co-ordination of technical installations within the in-situ concrete superstructures.
