The Cork School of Music project was designed to house studios, classrooms, theatres, and galleries for performing artists and associated schools similar to overspill centres. The project, which consists of 10,000m2 of floor area over six levels, was procured through the Jarvis consortium and forms part of a government-run public-private partnership pilot in Ireland.
The Cork School of Music has a major influence on the social and cultural life of Cork City. It now has the largest number of enrolments of any institution of its kind in the country and is a constituent school of the Cork Institute of Technology.
Buro Happold identified sustainability and low energy design as key drivers of the project and carried out detailed environmental modelling to create the natural ventilation strategy used through the atrium.
