Coillte Teoranta, the Irish Forestry Board headquarters, combines state-of-the-art energy-saving technology with extensive use of high grade natural materials. Located in Newtownmountkennedy, County Wicklow, the building is the first all-timber office complex in Ireland. It covers almost 2,300m2 of floor space and accommodates 100 staff working in a wide range of forestry disciplines.
Buro Happold was involved in the second phase of this project: the 1,000m2 extension to Coillte's original premises. The project has the first large scale wood pellet boiler installation in Ireland predominantly in sustainable timber, and aims to have zero carbon dioxide emissions from heating and hot water generation. The existing building had its electric storage heating removed and replaced by heating fed from the pellet boiler. The two buildings are connected by a canteen and social area to unite the new and old.
