Booths, the independent supermarket chain, was established in 1847 and continues to thrive in the North West and Yorkshire. The family-controlled group has now moved into a futuristic ‘green’ headquarters in Preston, designed by Buro Happold and architects Farrell & Clark to offer excellent environmental performance while meeting the demands of the client for a visually striking building that would provide a comfortable and inspirational place to work.
Buro Happold provided structural and building services engineering for this prestigious project, putting a strong emphasis on creating a ‘passive’ building that had minimal reliance on active systems. The two-storey office building incorporates the best in low energy and natural ventilation technology; features include an innovative thermal mass heating and cooling system, holographic mirrors to ‘bounce’ light into the office spaces, and the use of recycled rainwater to flush toilets.
Our specialist CoSA Solutions group carried out advanced computer simulations of the fabric and interior to inform the detailed ventilation strategy, including the number of openable windows required. We also provided advice on ground engineering, sustainability, infrastructure and access bridges to deliver the specification for the whole site. A multi-disciplinary approach meant that our engineers were able to work together to deliver cost savings and add value wherever possible.
