The project to provide a new international pier at Birmingham International Airport (BIA) is part of the ongoing development programme to cater for the increasing number of passengers, and is the first element of an ongoing masterplan study and public consultation undertaken by the airport. In addition to the pier, an extension to the existing international departure lounge is being finalised. The project design responds to a variety of influences, ranging from environmental issues such as solar heat gain and carbon emission control, to client aspirations and shareholder value.
A significant feature of the development is the need to achieve a simple, cost-effective and environmentally conscious design that will integrate with current and future demands of a busy airport. Risks commonly associated with airside construction projects will be reduced by using pre-manufactured products pre-assembled off site, while the general layout and functions are designed to make use of existing facilities and provide a positive passenger experience. Biomass boilers are utilised to significantly reduce life costs and lower carbon emissions.
The resulting design is simple and minimalist, providing a cost effective solution and setting the tone for future projects on the BIA campus. It will offer simple, clear and flexible facilities that can adapt easily and cost effectively to a number of different operational scenarios.
