Robin House in Balloch is a purpose-built children’s hospice that provides care and support for children with life limiting conditions and their families. It is the second hospice for the Children’s Hospice Association Scotland. The facility provides care for nine children at a time, along with accommodation for their families, as well as a specialist teenage unit, support areas, admin facilities and a hydrotherapy pool.
Structural engineering was essential in delivering a building that provides a sense of solidity and sanctuary, while also providing bright, dynamic spaces for children to play in.
The design team created an aesthetically pleasing structure which blends naturally into the beautiful National Park setting. The elegant glass atrium 'wave' roof appears to float above the timber facade, an illusion created through the use of supporting flat steel plates. The roof itself consists of four separate ribbons clad with plywood on timber rafters, supported by steel ribs and columns.
Natural ventilation was adopted where possible to reduce dependence on active systems and create a more comfortable internal environment. Full height glazing in many areas of the building provides an abundance of natural light and allows panoramic views over the surrounding rolling countryside.
