Born 1952. Studied Building Services at the Royal Military College, Shrivenham. Tony joined Buro Happold in 1982, becoming a director responsible for Building Services Engineering in 1994. He is a Chartered Engineer and Member of the Chartered Institution of Building Services, Member of the Institute of Energy and a Member of the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineering.

Tony McLaughlin is a master of design. His drawings are beautiful and they articulate the abstract exquisitely. It is well known within the practice that Buro Happold's success on many award-winning projects is due in no small part to Tony's precedent-setting ideas as well as to his love of his discipline and a penchant for entering and winning competitions. Tony inspires everyone, engineers and architects alike, to want to perfect each building. In order to influence and support good architecture, engineers must be good communicators. Tony runs design workshops and steers project teams which are characterised by the sharing of information across hierarchical boundaries. A thoughtful man, Tony has spent his career trying to understand the mutual influences of engineering and architecture on each other. He concentrates on designing buildings that are aesthetically pleasing, well engineered and environmentally sound.
