Paul graduated Jesus College, Cambridge with a first class degree in engineering science, to join international multidisciplinary engineering consultancy Buro Happold in 1991, where he has worked ever since. Chartered structural engineer Paul has succeeded in many notable achievements within the practice including contributing to some of Buro Happold’s most eye-catching and innovative building projects and most recently, leading its European business.

In 2008 he became Managing Director for Buro Happold’s European business, overseeing all UK and European offices. He currently heads up the European Executive Board and also sits on the company’s Main Board, providing guidance to the overall practice.

Paul became the company's youngest ever principal in 2000 when he was made a partner and director at the age of just 30. His next move was to establish and lead Buro Happold’s Design and Technology board in 2002, promoting blue sky thinking and innovation which developed a focal point within the firm for ideas development and research. Believing engineering to be a smart solution to many challenges, Paul’s reputation as a holistic problem solver who promotes excellence in design has enabled him to work with many of the leading designers around the world.

Over the past ten years, Paul has developed a specialism in sports and entertainment buildings and has led the teams responsible for engineering design on a number of innovative and award winning projects.  One such project was the Millennium Dome which won the 1999 Royal Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award for Innovation - the first time a construction related project had won in some 30 years. Other landmark projects that Paul has led include the new stadium for Arsenal FC, the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics Oval speed skating arena, the early masterplan for the London 2012 Games, Ascot racecourse’s redevelopment and the transformation of the Millennium Dome into the O2 Arena. Current projects include the new Aviva Stadium at Lansdowne Road in Dublin, the new stadia for Everton FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC as well as the new London 2012 Olympic Stadium.

Paul is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, the Royal Academy of Engineering, the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Royal Society for Arts, Manufacture & Commerce. His laid-back attitude combined with an intense commitment to the job in hand makes him a popular manager and sought-after project leader. He has written and presented a number of technical papers and has lectured at Cambridge, Yale and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 2008 Paul was awarded a Royal Academy of Engineering Silver Medal for his contribution to British engineering with a commercial benefit. He is well known for his support of local charities and encouraging others to ‘give something back to the community’.
