Nick Nelson
BSc CEng MICE MIStructE
Born 1959. Studied structural engineering at Southampton University Nick joined Buro Happold in 1986 as a structural engineer in our Bath office. In 1991 he travelled to Riyadh for two years playing a significant part in exciting projects that included the Al Salam Aircraft Facility and a newly built Palace for Prince Mishal. On his return to the UK Nick spent a further three years working on the flagship British Airways Waterside Head Offices based at Heathrow and following that worked out of our Leeds office with specific responsibility for The Lowry. In 1997 Nick returned to Bath where he took up the role of Group Director of one of our structural engineering groups. In May 2001 Nick's successful approach as Group Director as well as his superb engineering skills were recognised as he became a Principal of the practise. He is Member of the Institution of Structural Engineers and Member of the Institution of Civil Engineers. In 2007 he took up a position in the buro Happold New York office to further strengthen the management team in the US.
Nick's lateral approach to problem solving has been a key factor in his involvement in developing the IT systems in relation to CAD and modelling. This has led him to play a significant part in reThinking Construction Ltd as Director and the TeamWork projects carried out to develop industry use of modelling technology. The organisation encourages the use of advanced use of computer and Internet technology in the design process.
Nick is a brilliant engineer who combines his engineering excellence, computer modelling knowledge and personal attributes to deliver an elegant, efficient and economic solution for the client. His energy and enthusiasm for his work is what draws clients back time and again, safe in the knowledge that the solution Nick presents will always deliver client value without reducing the elegance of the form. He has the rare ability of being able to define what the client wants and what the architect can see in a simple yet stunning solution.
