Matthew Smith

Born 1966. Studied civil engineering at University College Swansea. Matthew joined Buro Happold in 1999 as a structural engineer and has a wide range of experience in all aspects of the discipline. Matthew has a particular interest in architectural design embracing a sustainable, holistic approach - specifically promoting the use of timber in engineering structures. He has extensive experience of refurbishment, theatres and public buildings and is also accomplished in the design of innovative bridges, such as Lockmeadow Footbridge in Maidstone.
Matthew has been responsible for developing Buro Happold’s Edinburgh office, which opened in May 2006, and is currently the Structural Group Director for North Europe. A true engineer with a formidable knowledge of materials and structures, Matthew has been integral to the expansion of Buro Happold’s operation in Scotland and across North Europe. This was recognised in May 2007 when he became a Principal of the firm.
Key projects Matthew has worked on include Edinburgh’s Telford College, Edinburgh University’s Potterrow development, Campbeltown Swimming Pool and the new National Museum of Liverpool. He has also greatly contributed to developing the practice's work in Denmark. Projects include Syddansk University new campus and concert hall in Sonderborg, the Danish National Opera House and Gentofte Sports Park in Copenhagen. Matthew is a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers.
