Alan Harbinson

Born 1964. Alan studied civil engineering at University of Ulster before joining Buro Happold in 1992 as a civil engineer. He is a chartered member of the Institute of Civil Engineers and a Member of the Institute of Highways and Transportation. He also lectures part time in Civil Engineering at Bath University throughout the academic year. Alan has had a fast-track career within Buro Happold. He was promoted to group manager in 1998 after returning from a period of working overseas in Buro Happold Kuala Lumpur office before taking up the post of group director in 2000. He became a Principal of the firm in May 2005. Alan leads the growing Bath Infrastructure group, which encompasses site wide infrastructure design, highways and transportation, river and coastal design and environmental planning.

Alan has extensive experience in infrastructure design, particularly in the field of highways and transportation, regeneration and water. Through his experience in these fields and working on many significant multi disciplinary projects he has developed the expertise of being able to see the wider picture and being able to develop best fit solutions that are integrated and sustainable.  He is able to use this expertise to lead many of Buro Happold’s large multi-disciplinary master planning projects in the UK and overseas. He has contributed significantly to the growth of the practice’s Infrastructure group during the last five years and continues to play a key role in its evolution.  Alan has a strong interest in environmental and sustainability and is currently engaged in growing Buro Happold’s environmental group.
