John Morrison
CEng FICE FIStructE

Born 1937. Studied civil and structural engineering at Brighton Technical College. A founding Principal of Buro Happold, John works mainly on projects driven by clients operating in the commercial market sectors. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers and a Fellow of the Institution of Civil Engineers, as well as Vice Chairman of the British Standards Committee on the composite design of steel and concrete structures.

As a result of his expertise in composite design, John has been invited to represent British interests in the development of the new Eurocode standard for the design of composite steel and concrete structures.

Some engineers seem to attract the particularly complex jobs. John's great gift is an ability to discern at an early stage in the design process those things that must come together to make a project simple both to design and to build. In this way he delivers efficient solutions that give clients’ projects crucial added commercial value.

John believes in sharing experience: in taking every opportunity for experienced people to teach new engineers organisational skills. At Buro Happold he is a driving force in encouraging young, newly qualified engineers to try and see the big picture in every engineering project.

Projects in which he has played a principal role include Le Royal Hotel, Amman, Jordan; the Sheraton Hotel, Amman, Jordan; Queensberry House office building, London; City Quays luxury apartments, London; Tsim Sha Tsui Cultural Centre, Hong Kong; Urea Storage facility, Jubail; Anchor Foods Cold Store, Swindon; St Catherine by the Tower Hotel, London UK.

John retired as a Principal at the end of April, 2005 although his expertise is still being brought to bear on the practice in his role as a consultant.
