Toh Shimazaki Architecture (t-sa) explores the roles of structure and environment in its ‘Working Table’ display
The latest chapter of Buro Happold’s popular and inspiring ‘Architecture: Where to’ series, taking place in the practice’s Newman Street offices in London, opens on Wednesday 20th February.
The exhibition, which features young and dynamic south London practice Toh Shimazaki Architecture (t-sa), focuses on the importance of collaboration in the design process, and runs until 7th March.
“With working models, development sketches and photography, the exhibition will provide a valuable insight into how this innovative and growing practice enables clients and end users to access and influence the design development process,” says Wolf Mangelsdorf, Buro Happold’s London structures group director.
One example of this approach is OSh house in Surrey. The building comprises of four separate volumes that were allowed to shift against each other during the development of the design. This enabled the structure to harmonise with the gentle contours of the surrounding landscape, whilst also fitting the client’s brief for an open plan house, with a central kitchen to unite the family’s activities.
“We achieved a real sense of dialogue with the landscape. A series of vistas are opened up to the family as they move throughout their home,” explains Takero Shimazaki of t-sa. “This project will be exhibited, along with several other schemes, where the establishment of an adaptable structural principle allows architectural forms to shift in accordance with their surroundings, and the client’s programme for their project.”
Buro Happold set up the ‘Architecture: Where to’ exhibition series to promote close links between architecture and engineering and foment discussion within the community. Buro Happold’s public exhibitions are open to all visitors who are welcome to come and browse.
