Tony McLaughlin honoured by AIA

American Institute of Architects makes seven professionals honorary members

Tony McLaughlin, who is both a partner and building services director at multi-disciplinary engineering practice Buro Happold, is among seven diverse professionals to be honoured by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) this month.

“Despite their disparate roles, they are all people who, although not architects by profession, have offered distinguished service to architecture and thus have made all of our lives richer,” said a spokesperson from the AIA.

McLaughlin currently chairs the Building Services Discipline Development Group within Buro Happold, whose role is to ensure that the firm’s culture, technical standards and skill base are maintained and encouraged throughout the firm.

“I am very interested in both the design process and how we communicate it to clients and building users,” said McLaughlin. “The role of the engineer in the design process is unquestionable and will continue to be so, even as the construction process moves towards greater standardisation.”

During McLaughlin’s 35 years in the industry, he has engineered both national and international projects including London’s Millennium Dome, designed by Richard Rogers Partnership and for which he received the 1999 Royal Academy of Engineering MacRobert Award. He has also worked on the exemplar Genzyme Corporation headquarters in Massachusetts with architect Stephan Behnish, where the building services design achieved a cut in energy use of 42% and a 34% decrease in water consumption compared to similar regulations-compliant buildings. He is currently a key member of the team designing London’s main 2012 Olympic stadium, in conjunction with HOK sport architecture, and has been involved with landmark projects in the Middle East such as Foster + Partners’ Al Faisaliah tower in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as well as KPF’s headquarters building for the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority.

“I am delighted to have been made an honorary member of the AIA,” said McLaughlin.
