Buro Happold teams up with Architecture Today, London Metropolitan University and FinnForest for expo design
There will be a very special display on view at the Ecobuild exhibition taking place in Earl’s Court from the 26th to 28th February this year. Architecture Today will be hosting a stand exhibiting a timber pavilion designed and built by students from the London Metropolitan University, using materials provided by timber-frame specialists FinnForest. The pavilion will also employ 90-year old recycled studwork in its fabrication.
Crucial to the success of the pavilion was structural assistance provided by Buro Happold specialist timber engineer Yannig Robert, who worked with the students to ensure its structural viability.
“Usually timber frames involve building a wall on top of joists, but in this instance we have a wall on top of a wall, which needed some work to stabilise. I spent a very constructive day with the students and feel sure their design will stand out.”
David Grandorge, the student’s tutor at London Metropolitan University, has an enthusiasm for timber construction, especially in composite forms, and has been sharing this with his students over the past months. “The commission to work on this live construction was eagerly received, as it would enable us to work with leaders in the field,” he said. “The collaboration with Buro Happold has been particularly important in assessing the feasibility of the project from strategic to detailed scales. We hope that the resulting pavilion will provoke some thoughts as to how we might use timber in the future”.
