Brent Cross Cricklewood scheme wins at London Planning Awards

Buro Happold ensuring sustainability of 250 acre development

The London Planning Awards, hosted on 16th January at City Hall, saw Brent Cross Cricklewood win the Best Conceptual Project award for its part in contributing to the regeneration of run-down quarters of the capital. Unlike last year’s winners, which included the iconic Arsenal Emirates Stadium (also built by Buro Happold), this year’s focus centred on schemes emphasising regeneration. The overall winner, of the Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Planning, was awarded to the Kings Cross Central redevelopment.

The Brent Cross Cricklewood scheme is a 250 acre development of previously neglected land in north-west London. The scheme will provide an additional 7,500 homes and 27,000 jobs over its 20-year development, as well as a transformed shopping centre, new High Street, commercial district, schools, leisure facilities and parks. It will also deliver the largest investment in transport infrastructure in the area’s history. “The award is a huge accolade for the scheme,” said Jonathan Joseph, Development Director for the Brent Cross Cricklewood Development Partners. “It has taken years of hard work to develop such a comprehensive Masterplan, and the development of the new town centre at Brent Cross Cricklewood will bring real benefits for local people.”

Buro Happold has been engaged by the Partners to ensure the high sustainability of the development through the implementation of a number of strategies related to sustainability and project delivery.

“Buro Happold is delighted to have won this award,” said project leader Bill Addis. “In close collaboration with other members of the project team, we have developed strategies for reducing energy use and carbon emissions, for utilities and their procurement, for materials resource efficiency strategy and for water use. Collaborating with consultants from SLR, we are developing a large ‘energy from waste’ scheme that will deliver 40% less carbon emissions than energy used from the grid.” Construction is due to start in 2010, subject to planning permission.
''The standard of entries in this year's Awards is outstanding, reminding us once again that London leads the world in this field as in so many others,” said Ken Livingstone, Mayor of London. “I am particularly impressed to see the increased prominence of design features that address the challenges of climate change. Buildings are one of the main consumers of energy, and it is absolutely essential that the planning system is used to achieve major emissions reductions.”
