Buro Happold shows commitment to a full multi-disciplinary practice

Steve Cowan’s appointment integral to success of Sustainability and Alternative Technologies team

Steve Cowan has recently joined Buro Happold’s Sustainability and Alternative Technologies (SAT) group in Glasgow as a consultant. With over five years experience in mechanical engineering, he has worked on various office, retail and airport projects throughout the UK. In addition Steve has experience of major London developments and has produced energy strategies for various mixed use schemes in line with the London Renewables Plan, to implement low and zero carbon (LZC) technologies.

He said: “My new role represents a challenging career diversion from my building services background. I’m looking forward to getting involved in the redevelopment of the Lower Lea Valley and hopefully bringing some of my engineering skills and attributes to the team. The possibility of working on overseas projects was also a big attraction when I joined Buro Happold, and I relish the opportunity to become involved with these in the near future”.

Spending the next few weeks in London, Steve will be forming ties with colleagues, which is essential to ensure the maintenance of a fully collaborative business approach.

One of the aims of the SAT group is to deliver environmentally sustainable solutions that harness LZC energy sources. These include renewable technologies and combined heat and power (CHP) systems.

Jane Boyle also joined the SAT team at the end of last year. Having worked in the built environment for over twelve years, Jane’s skill-base and experience will help to enhance their capacity and capabilities. She has extensive experience in sustainably-led building development and design, 3D modelling, simulation, passive design and environmental assessments.

Senior SAT consultant Allan Stirling said: “Over the past couple of months we have welcomed two new members to the SAT team, strengthening and broadening our skills base.”

“The expansion of the team from two staff members to six in the last year demonstrates the team’s desire to enhance the services currently on offer, and also reflects the increasing demand for sustainability advice. We are currently working on a variety of projects covering a diverse geographic range from Hawaii, across Europe to the Middle East.

“Within SAT we offer expert strategic advice on energy planning and policy, regulatory requirements, energy procurement, alternative energy options and meeting sustainability targets. Our expertise also covers masterplanning, environmental impact assessments and water conservation strategies.”

The SAT team is currently contributing to masterplans for various projects in Scotland including sustainable housing and mixed-use developments, as well as sustainable energy strategies. They are also working with Buro Happold’s engineering teams in Glasgow and Denmark on the new Massar Children’s Discovery Centre in Syria and associated public realm works, including specific considerations relating to energy, materials and water resources.
