Essential funds raised for Royal United Hospital Neo-natal Intensive Care Unit

Buro Happold excels in human table football competition

A number of companies in Bath have taken part in a fantastic event in aid of the Royal United Hospital (RUH) Forever Friends Appeal, to raise funds for a new sustainable neo-natal intensive care unit.

International multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy Buro Happold, one of eight participating teams in the Foresters Human Table Football Competition at Bath Pavilion, raised £500, and came from two goals down to the Bath Sports and Leisure Centre team in the final to equalise and eventually score the winning goal with less than a minute to spare!

Buro Happold is in fact providing building services and structural engineering for the project, which has been designed to more than double the current size of the premature babies unit, providing a safer, calmer and more spacious environment, suited to vulnerable babies’ needs.

Steve Macey, Buro Happold Associate Director and project leader, said: “It was great to participate in this inaugural team event to help raise funds for the RUH NICU, as well as being actively involved in the design and development of this new sustainable facility. And winning was a real bonus!”

Jo Hones, Events & Community Officer for The Forever Friends Appeal, said: “The current unit at the RUH is incredibly cramped, with four incubators in rooms meant for one. There’s barely enough space for essential life-saving equipment, let alone privacy for distressed new parents. All the funds raised through this event will help us further towards our £4.7 million target to build a new unit. So thank you to every team that took part!”
