Buro Happold’s new Indian office wins first project for World Cup Cricket Stadium

New Pune International Cricket Stadium designed by Hopkins Architects and AKT and project managed by Buro Happold

Consultancy’s team in India celebrates early win in conjunction with London office

Buro Happold has been appointed by the Maharashtra Cricket Association to project manage the design, procurement and construction of the new Pune International Cricket Centre.

The 55,000-seater stadium will host key cricket matches during the 2011 world cup which is being held in India and Sri Lanka.

Buro Happold’s London-based team will take the lead role on the project until early 2009 while the project is designed by UK-based consultants. The consultancy’s new Pune office, which opened this March, will then lead the management of the tendering and construction phase to ensure the stadium is delivered on time, to budget and to the high standards expected by the International Cricket Council.

Project consultants include Hopkins Architects (architect), Adams Kara Taylor (structural engineer) and Tata Consulting Engineers (Indian-based architect and consulting engineer).

The state-of-the-art stadium is being designed as an amphitheatre to afford spectators maximum visibility. It will include recreational facilities such as a swimming pool and gymnasium as well as a ‘cricket academy’ for the development of the next generation of players.

Buro Happold Director Andy Parker said: “Our appointment on this high-profile project is testament to our growing reputation in India and the wider region, which has been built on our track record, as well as recognition for our global project management skills and stadia expertise.

“Our ability to work closely with UK-based project team members, as well as the client and contractor on the ground in India, was instrumental to the appointment which is an early and significant success for our new Indian office.”

A key challenge for Buro Happold’s teams will be the delivery of the completed stadium by September 2010 to enable representatives of the International Cricket Council to inspect and approve the facilities in time for the World Cup.
