Asia is the latest market in multi disciplinary practice’s expansion
International multi disciplinary engineering consultancy Buro Happold has set its sights on Asia, opening new offices in Pune, one of India’s fastest developing cities, located 150 km south west of Mumbai.
India has become one of fastest growing economies in the world which could at its current pace of expansion overtake Italy, France and the UK to become the world's fifth largest economy within a decade *. This trend has been backed up by the increasing number of business enquiries that Buro Happold has received to work in the area, particularly through the practice’s New York office.
Buro Happold has developed strong relationships with architects working in the country namely Fosters, FX Fowler and Robert Stern (RAMSA) and it is these key links, which have inspired the well respected practice to open its first Indian office.
With a population of 4.5m Pune is the eight largest city in India and is ideally located to serve as a base to support the practice’s engineering activities throughout India and Dubai; its has excellent transport links, and the office is only 10 minutes from the city’s airport. The city, a thriving, bustling cultural centre, is often referred to as the Oxford of the East for its universities and educational establishments, as well as also being known as the Detroit of India due to its rapidly expanding automotive industry.
Initially the office will concentrate on providing off shore engineering support to other more established parts of Buro Happold. Currently the Pune team are providing local support to the New York office which is working on a series of projects with Hines and RAMSA respectively, as well as pursuing opportunities in Delhi and Hyderabad on developments principally run through Buro Happold in Bath and London. This work ranges from high-end, high-rise, mixed use commercial and residential sites through to hospitality developments. There is also the scope for considerable infrastructure support to large urban master plans, especially those over 100 Hectares in size.
Director Andy Parker is heading up the new team in Pune and is looking forward to a wealth of new business as well as interest from engineers looking to take on a role in this exciting new opportunity. Andy says “India presents exciting opportunities for Buro Happold to be involved with projects on a scale rarely seen in developing countries. We’ve only just opened and are looking to expand our work force – particularly with people whose long term goal matches ours - to deliver sustainable designs and build a sustainable Buro Happold business in India.”
The future promises to be very bright for this new Buro Happold venture.
