Middle East Architect Awards

Buro Happold wins Engineering Firm of the Year at the inaugural Middle East Architect awards

Buro Happold has just won the Engineering Firm of the Year award at the Middle East Architect Awards, the region’s most prestigious event dedicated to the architectural industry.

The lavish awards ceremony took place at the Westin Dubai, and gathered more than 250 leading professionals from the world of architecture, as well as engineers, developers, service providers, contractors and building owners. The aim of the awards is to raise the profile of the industry, and to reward and recognise those that have made significant contributions to its development.

Eleven awards were presented at the ceremony in categories ranging from concept design of the year to mixed-use development of the year, and developer of the year to architect of the year. The awards were judged by a prestigious panel of architects and renowned engineers and sustainability experts from the region.

Accepting the award, Group Director Marco Malpiedi said “It’s a real honour to accept this award on behalf of Buro Happold as it recognises the stunning projects we have delivered in the region. Our ethos is not only to enable architectural design and engineering to work together but to enhance and catalyse the architectural concept into a shared, creative and complete vision.

“Our detailed knowledge of local markets means we enjoy working in close collaboration with our partners across all phases of the building process and this, we believe, has been key in enabling us to understand and meet our clients’ goals. This, combined with the ability to draw on the expertise of our teams globally is proving to be a real recipe for success for Buro Happold.”

Judges felt the wealth of projects submitted by Buro Happold revealed an enthusiasm for transforming challenging architectural plans into built realities, which showed the consultancy’s wide ranging capabilities and their talent for innovation. The complexity of projects underscored the importance of developing a multidisciplinary approach that addresses structural innovation and environmental issues at the earliest possible stage in the building process.

Malpiedi added “we acknowledge the fact that buildings are the biggest CO emitters in our modern world. In spending anything between 10 to 22 hours each day either at work or home, the catchment area in the built environment for savings is massive simply due to the quantity of time they are in use. This is something we in Buro Happold are working hard to mitigate through our respectful and innovative design solutions.”
