Engineers collaborate on special installation at the launch of the London Festival of Architecture (LFA)

Created as part of the LFA’s ‘Kensington, Chelsea and Knightsbridge Hub’, Buro Happold supported the design of a 12 metre high temporary ‘cable net’ structure – which was assembled and dismantled on Exhibition Road on Saturday 21 June.

The project was completed with help from members of the general public who were able to experience the space created and a new eight channel site specific ‘sound sculpture’ by American artist Bill Fontana.

The structure featured tensile components – including 240 metres of nylon rope, a ten metre long aluminium truss and 132 custom made nodes.

Buro Happold fielded a strong and creative team lead by Principal Mike Cook, project leader Angus Palmer and engineer Chris Davies for the challenging and unusual project.

Davies, who led Buro Happold’s team on the day, said: “It was great to be part of one of the main installations at such a prestigious event. We had a short time frame to deliver the project but through close team work, determination and the help of the general public we delivered a genuinely impressive structure.”

Students from Imperial College London, taught by Mike Cook as part of his creative design course at the College, also participated at the event.
