Cambridge lecturers win Happold Brilliant Award

Ted Happold’s ethos continues to shine through

A team of lecturers from Cambridge University’s engineering department has won the 2008 Happold Brilliant Award, for excellence in the teaching of building physics in the context of a low carbon economy.

The winning team had collaborated closely with the department of architecture, involving over a hundred students in a project to design a solar powered house for entry into the European Solar Decathlon.

The Happold Brilliant award, instituted in 1996, was the idea of Ted Happold, founding partner of Buro Happold. He was responsible for establishing environmental and building services engineering within the practice and believed deeply in promoting the excellence of teaching building services engineering, and the contribution that a quality education can bring to the work, values and ideas of the engineers of the future.

The award is funded by the Happold Trust, whose goal is to promote education, training and research in the construction industry fields of engineering, design, technology and architecture.

Allan McRobie and Randall Thomas collected the award, consisting of a crystal column and a cheque for £1,000, on behalf of the University’s engineering department. The money will be used to support and reward student work and interest in the subject.
