Prize-winning architect showcases at Buro Happold exhibition

Nekton Design to launch Buro Happold’s sustainability-themed ‘Architecture: Where to’ series

Sustainability is a driving parameter in Nekton Design’s work, making it an ideal practice to launch Buro Happold’s exhibition on Tuesday 8th July.

Founded by Jeffrey Turko and Gudjon Erlendsson in 1999, Nekton sees itself as an experimental design studio. Engaging in works across the scales of architecture and urbanism, the practice seeks to operate at the edges of theory, materiality and systemics.

Nekton’s projects include the ‘Folded House’ and ‘Hogni House’. Both buildings, located in Iceland, have very specific sustainability aspects – including highly effective green hydroelectric energy and heating sourced via geo thermal energy.

Working with Buro Happold, Nekton produced a prize-winning masterplan for Vatnsmyri, Iceland. Having been selected as finalists for the design, entitled ‘Turf City’, the submission went on to win second place in the design competition. The project demonstrates Nekton’s approach to sustainability – that sustainability works best on a large scale. Sustainable environmental, financial and social factors were the foundations of all design decisions, from the strategic to the formal.

“Buro Happold has set up this exhibition series to foster new links and inspire discussion between architects, engineers and other built environment professionals,” says Wolf Mangelsdorf, Buro Happold’s London structures group director. “Previous launch events and exhibitions have been extremely well attended and supported to date.”

The exhibition is open to the public at Buro Happold’s office (17 Newman Street, London W1T 1PD) on weekdays between 9am to 5.30pm (the closest tube stations are Tottenham Court Road, Goodge Street and Oxford Circus). The exhibition runs until 1st August.
