Multi-disciplinary international engineering consultancy, Buro Happold has won the Engineering Consultant of the Year award at the 13th annual Building Awards, held at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Park Lane, London on 18 April.
In a very successful night for Buro Happold-engineered projects, the Emirates Stadium, home of Arsenal Football Club, also won the Project of the Year award. The Savill Building, an iconic timber gridshell that serves as a visitor centre in Windsor Great Park, was highly commended. A new air traffic control tower, with accompanying hanger and terminal building, for TAG Aviation at Farnborough Airport was another one of the six finalists in this category.
The citation for Buro Happold stated:
“Despite the competition, Buro Happold still stood out from its rivals. The firm had a spectacular financial performance over the past year, with profit rising by 59% to £4.3m and offices opening in Edinburgh, Belfast, Los Angeles, Moscow and Abu Dhabi. The practice has always had a reputation for excellence in design and 2006 was no exception: it was the design consultant behind the spectacular Emirates Stadium in north London, which in August became the new home of Arsenal FC. It also completed the Sackler Crossing in the Royal Botanic Gardens in Kew, and the RIBA-award winning Evelina children’s hospital in London.”
Paul Westbury, project partner for Emirates Stadium and Rod Macdonald, chairman of Buro Happold, collected the award on behalf of the practice. Rod commented:
