Hakes Associates display marks return of Buro Happold exhibition series
Following on from a successful launch earlier this year Buro Happold continues its exhibition series on the future of architecture, starting with an exhibition of the work of Hakes Associates.
It is the first of three practices to exhibit under the theme ‘Engineered Architecture – approaches to integrated design’, which will run until February 2008.
Buro Happold structures group director, Wolf Mangelsdorf, said: “We’re really enthusiastic about the launch of the second phase of ‘Architecture: Where to’. The first two themes were very successful, with each architectural showcase offering an exciting contribution to the discussion of new concepts.
“This next theme will consider the concepts of integrated architecture, the boundaries between architecture and engineering, and whether they are blurring. It will explore how the engineering of structures and environments can have an increasing influence on the expression of architectural form. The display is visible to anyone passing through the London office.”
The work of Hakes Associates will be displayed at Buro Happold’s office in Newman Street, London, from Monday 3 December to Friday 4 January 2008.
The practice, established in 2000 by Julian Hakes and Cari-Jane Hakes, is particularly interested in the representation of architectural space through drawing, painting and 3D computer montage.
Julian Hakes said: “Our work is heavily influenced by our research interests, including the study of the spatiality of the body through choreographed movement and the role of the perception of light and acoustics in space. This backbone of theory manifests itself in many of our projects giving each scheme a resonance with user and the places in which they are situated.
“We are looking forward to exploring this further in the ‘approaches to integrated design’ theme.”
Hakes Associates’ first project, the Wycoller Visitors Centre, was won through an open RIBA competition in 2001, and received a RIBA award in 2002. The practice has also won other design competitions including the Mobius Bridge in Bristol, the Bridge of Hope in Liverpool and a new 350 seat chapel and auditorium in London. However the practice does not limit itself to designing just for the built environment: its creativity has expanded to include the development of shoes, luggage and furniture.
Hakes Associates exhibition will be the first in the series which will showcase some of the industry’s most forward-thinking architectural practices who are influencing the changing spaces and places of tomorrow.
