Perth Concert Hall wins prestigious Building Services Award

Project of the Year success for consulting engineer Buro Happold

Perth Concert Hall has won Project of the Year at the Building Services Awards 2007.

International multi-disciplinary consulting engineer Buro Happold, which has offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh, scooped the accolade for providing the building services engineering for the contemporary concert hall and conference venue.

Perth Concert Hall is an organic building consisting of a 1,200-seat concert hall that, through the clever use of retractable seating and moveable staging, can be transformed into a number of different modes from flat floor to theatre in the round.

The Building Services Awards judges said: “The designers have shunned the standard design solution for an extremely elegant engineering design solution that perfectly complements the building’s architecture.”

Buro Happold Partner Rod Manson, who attended the Building Services Awards ceremony at Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Monday, said: “For maximum ‘people comfort’ at Perth Concert Hall it was important to ensure that ventilation would work efficiently, while at the same time ensuring a low energy design solution for the venue.

“Buro Happold has a well-established reputation in the cultural sector and we were able to bring a range of multi-disciplinary skills to the project.  We are delighted that this success has been recognised with the Project of the Year win at the Building Services Awards.”

Perth Concert Hall incorporates key features to help achieve the design team’s aim to create a highly sustainable building, including exposed thermal mass, extensive use of natural ventilation and façade shading.  Initial energy monitoring figures show that the building’s energy use is below the industry standard.

Buro Happold also provided structural engineering, fire engineering and environmental simulation analysis for Perth Concert Hall.  Perth Concert Hall was also the winner of the Regeneration Award in the British Construction Industry Awards 2006.
