IStructE Awards success for Buro Happold

The practice celebrates winning four awards

International multi-disciplinary engineering consultancy Buro Happold swept the board at this year’s IStructE Awards with four wins, including the Supreme Award for Structural Engineering Excellence.

The Savill Building, the visitor centre at Windsor Great Park, was recognised as the finest example of structural engineering over the past year, over and above the winners of the other 11 categories. It also scooped the Award for Arts, Leisure or Entertainment Structures.

Commenting on its striking timber gridshell roof design, the judges said: “The whole design process was one of collaboration and discussion. The outcome is a beautiful building that has significantly exceeded the client’s expectations, and generated much interest due to its architectural form, choice of local and sustainable materials and the beauty of the expressed structure itself.”

The other two wins included the Heritage Award for Infrastructure, for the design of Dresden Railway Station, and the Commercial/Retail Structures category, for the design of Arsenal’s new Emirates Stadium.

Structures director for London, Mike Cook, said: “I'm absolutely delighted that so many excellent examples of creative, elegant engineering were given the limelight at the institution's awards. That a large number of those getting awards were from Buro Happold is a real thrill.

“To have our work singled out in this way is an acknowledgement by our fellow professionals of what we are doing. The diversity of the categories that we had a presence in demonstrates the consistent high standards that are achieved throughout the practice’s projects.

“It is an honour also to be recognised for our work on Arsenal’s new Emirates Stadium, which was recently chosen by the government’s Counter Terrorism and Security Minister, Lord West, as an exemplar project to show how popular public structures should be built to counter the threat of terrorism.

“It was great to have an opportunity for our teams and clients to come together to celebrate the very best of structural engineering. Our best work comes from a truly holistic, collaborative effort with clients, architects and the wider team. Really we were celebrating successful collaboration as well as structural engineering!”

Besides winning awards, Buro Happold’s work on Baskerville House was also commended in the Heritage Award for Buildings category. The Palestra scheme in London and the Sackler crossing in Kew Gardens, Richmond also made the shortlists for the Commercial/Retail and Pedestrian Bridge categories respectively.

More than 400 guests attended the Structural Awards 2007 dinner and ceremony, which took place on Wednesday 14 November in Lawrence Hall in London. The annual awards by the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) recognise excellence in structural design and highlight innovative projects.
