Building Services Awards Major Project of the Year for Bath-based practice
Bath-based consulting engineer Buro Happold has scooped the Major Project of the Year prize at this year’s Building Services Awards for its work on Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium.
The judges said that Buro Happold had made: “An astonishing contribution to an outstanding project” and that “the scheme would not have been capable of meeting the client’s demands without the excellent services design.”
The practice, in Lower Bristol Road, was initially appointed to Emirates Stadium in March 2000, along with architect HOK Sport, to provide structural engineering. But, as the design evolved, Buro Happold was asked to provide more services. These included building services engineering, civil and geotechnical engineering, bridges, infrastructure, fire engineering, disability design and security consulting.
Buro Happold Partner David Herd said: “The success of our Emirates Stadium services strategy is largely due to the multi-disciplinary nature of our appointment. This helped Buro Happold to fully integrate the environmental engineering solutions while working within the high aesthetic standards of the architectural design.
“On a major project such as this, it is vital that all disciplines and organisations work closely together to ensure that the client’s objectives and best interests are met. The team’s proactive approach meant that the new 60,000-seat venue was delivered on time and within budget. We are delighted that Buro Happold’s contribution has been recognised with the Building Services Award for Major Project of the Year.”
Led by Steve McCleave, the Buro Happold team tasked with designing the environmental systems for Emirates Stadium focused on creating a functional, comfortable, flexible space suitable for the match days when crowds can reach 60,000 and non-match day events when the hospitality facilities are used.
As part of the strategy, a mix of systems was used - from full air conditioning in the restaurants to natural ventilation through the concourse areas. One of the major design features was the drainage of the roof, which lays claim to the largest pumped system of its kind in the UK.
At the Building Services Awards ceremony at Grosvenor House Hotel in London on Monday, Buro Happold also picked up Project of the Year for Perth Concert Hall and Leeds-based engineer Anna Matthews won Young Achiever of the Year.
