Cottrell and Vermeulen Architecture’s work showcased at exhibition
Buro Happold continues its exhibition series on the future of architecture with the launch of a display by Cottrell and Vermeulen Architecture.
It is the final exhibit under the theme of ‘Changing Communities - does architecture have the power?’ as part of the Architecture: Where to series.
Buro Happold Group Director, Wolf Mangelsdorf, said: “The exhibition series has so far been extremely insightful, and each architectural showcase has offered a new and exciting contribution. The current theme began on 28 May, and considers the ways in which ambitious architecture projects are attempting to address issues such as the widening gap between rich and poor, the integration of minorities in our communities, and problems in deprived inner city areas.
“The exhibition provides architects, engineers and other industry figures with an opportunity to discuss new concepts. It is visible to everyone who passes through our London office.”
The work of Cottrell and Vermeulen Architecture will be displayed at Buro Happold’s office in Newman Street, London, from Tuesday 10 July to Friday 27 July.
Established in 1992 by Richard Cottrell and Brian Vermeulen, the practice’s interests are diverse, ranging from the built environment, to landscape, exhibitions and new construction technologies.
Richard Cottrell said: “Our architecture has grown out of the possibilities created by community change. Our work aims to create a collaborative process rather than a preconceived product, and it is intended to be imaginative, open and enjoyed. We start each project with an investigative approach and an open mind so that the built form will be closely tied to the needs of both the user and surrounding area.
“We are excited to explore this idea further in the Architecture: Where to series.”
Cottrell and Vermeulen Architecture has won various RIBA Awards, and three Civic Trust Awards, as well as many design competitions. It has worked on a number of high-profile and innovative projects including collaborating with Buro Happold on the design of Westborough Primary School in Westcliff-on-Sea, a school with a vision to transform its environment and create the best possible place for the school children. This design included a cardboard building made almost entirely from recycled materials which may be recycled again in the future.
Work by some of the industry’s most forward-thinking architectural practices who are influencing the changing spaces and places of tomorrow, are being showcased by Buro Happold throughout 2007.
The next theme in the exhibition series, ‘Engineered Architecture – approaches to integrated design’, is due to begin on Monday 3 September. It will explore the boundaries between architecture and engineering, how the engineering of structures and environments can have an increasing influence on the expression of architectural form. Discussions will include how architecture embraces this, and also the concepts of integrated architecture.
