Buro Happold engineer wins Young Achiever of the Year prize

Anna Matthews scoops prestigious Building Services Award

Consulting Engineer Buro Happold’s Anna Matthews has won Young Achiever of the Year at the Building Services Awards 2007.

Anna, a mechanical engineer, joined the Integrated Building Group within Buro Happold’s Leeds office in 2002. She has since worked on high profile projects including the development of a state-of-the-art student village at the University of Sheffield, and the Leeds Discovery Centre, the resource facility for the new museum in the centre of Leeds.

The judges described Anna as demonstrating “leadership and a good life-work balance”, and said she possesses the ability to “successfully communicate technical issues to non-technical people”.

Anna joined Buro Happold after graduating from the University of Leeds. In her final year she was sponsored by the Happold Trust, the registered charity established by Buro Happold’s eight founding partners in 1995 to promote education, research, and training in the fields applicable to the construction industry, engineering, design, technology and architecture.

A highlight of Anna’s career has been her involvement in the Wakefield Hospitals project. Amongst other responsibilities, Anna co-ordinated the Buro Happold elements of the design during the early stages of the project to create a major ambulatory care unit at Pontefract General Infirmary, and a new replacement for Pinderfields General Hospital. During the project’s initial stages Anna developed a series of ‘cartoons’ as a method of providing an innovative technique to convey complex engineering in a straightforward manner. This initiative has since resulted in the employment of a full-time graphic illustrator in the Leeds office.

Dedicated to professional development, Anna is currently CIBSE Yorkshire Region programme secretary. She has also been responsible for upgrading the Buro Happold training scheme.

Anna said: “I’m delighted to have received the Young Achiever of the Year award. I was so pleased to have been shortlisted and really didn’t expect to win.

“Due to the floods it was touch and go as to whether we would make the awards ceremony. Fortunately we did, as it was definitely a once in a lifetime experience!”

At the Building Services Awards ceremony at Grosvenor House Hotel in London last Monday, Buro Happold also won Project of the Year for Perth Concert Hall and Major Project of the Year for Arsenal’s Emirates Stadium.
