Principal Nick Nelson transfers to New York office
Group Director Nick Nelson has joined Buro Happold’s thriving New York office to help steer the rapidly growing project portfolio across the United States.
Buro Happold’s ability to deliver integrated design solutions, with a particular expertise in energy-efficient ‘green’ buildings, sets it apart from most US-based engineering consultancies. More than 120 staff now work at the New York office, which last year moved to larger premises on Broadway and continues to take more space to fulfil project requirements. The Los Angeles office has also grown rapidly since opening in 2006 and now has over 30 staff.
Nick’s appointment as the third principal in the US, alongside Craig Schwitter and Denzil Gallagher, is testament to Buro Happold’s continued international success. The New York office already has a reputation for providing personal and flexible services for clients, and Nick will further strengthen the management team.
He said: “Moving to New York is a fantastic opportunity for me. I’ve worked on projects in the UK and Saudi Arabia, but the US will be a new challenge and one I am looking forward to. I’m excited about the prospect of working alongside Craig Schwitter and Denzil Gallagher, and I have confidence that together we will be able to secure the continued success and development of the New York office. I enjoy taking a leading and active design role on projects I am involved in, and I will look forward to continuing this in the US.”
A chartered engineer, Nick has worked at Buro Happold since 1986 and has a wealth of experience across a variety of projects in the UK and abroad. Before moving to New York, he established and oversaw the Birmingham office, which had also recently moved to larger central offices to better serve the expanding demands of the region.
Nick has been involved in the design of arts, offices, education, residential and retail buildings, and has led a number of high-profile projects. This includes the British Airways Headquarters project to design a prestigious, single office flagship building next to Heathrow Airport, the headquarters for Vodafone at Newbury and the redevelopment of the Royal Shakespeare Theatre in Stratford upon Avon. He also worked on the Centre for Mathematical Sciences project at the University of Cambridge, a design that took advantage of excavated space in order to keep the overall height of the centre to an acceptably low level.
Buro Happold has been working across the United States for over 20 years. The New York office was established in 1999, following increasing demand to provide structural and MEP solutions for a wider range of building types and design challenges. It covers a broad range of sectors including public facilities, commercial and retail, education and medical, and transport and urban development.
