Buro Happold appoints leading contaminated land specialist
Ground Engineering group to benefit from expert’s knowledge and experience
Buro Happold’s Ground Engineering group has been bolstered by the appointment of Hugh Mallett, who will lead its new Geoenvironmental team.
Hugh, a specialist in contaminated land, brings more than 30 years’ experience to the multi-disciplinary practice’s Geoenvironmental team, set up specifically to develop and carry out work on brownfield sites. Appointed as an Associate Director, he joins Buro Happold’s London office after 16 years with Aspinwall / Enviros Consulting.
Buro Happold’s Ground Engineering team identifies and implements solutions for structural foundations, basements, tunnels, retaining walls, earthworks and site remediation. With experience covering all major sectors, the practice carries out geotechnical and geoenvironmental investigations and risk assessments to inform the design and help clients get the best value from existing ground conditions.
Geoenvironmental engineering issues are of increasing importance, with the growing trend for regeneration and building schemes on reclaimed – and often contaminated – land. This has led to the recognition of the need for increasing sophistication in the assessment and mitigation of risks, as well as communication with various stakeholders - ranging from clients and regulators to the general public. Hugh will lead on these projects, working closely with other groups in Buro Happold, particularly the practice’s specialist geotechnical and environmental teams.
Hugh said: “I’m really pleased to have been appointed to this post and looking forward to the fresh challenges of the sort Buro Happold will provide. I relish the opportunity to work on the larger-scale projects as part of a multi-disciplinary team that takes a fully-integrated approach to ground engineering.”
In his new role Hugh is, among other projects, working on the masterplanning of Leith waterfront in Edinburgh and the infrastructure of Chatham Dockyard in Kent. He is currently preparing a contaminated land strategy, which identifies current issues within the industry and opportunities for Buro Happold.
Hugh spent the first 10 years of his career working on the geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical aspects of various civil engineering and construction projects in the UK and overseas. He then worked for the Department of the Environment for four years, providing advice to ministers and senior civil servants in formulating government policy and research related to minerals planning.
As well as being a Chartered Geologist, Hugh is registered Specialist in Land Condition (SiLC). He has been Chairman of the Association of Geotechnical Specialists (AGS), Chairman of the AGS Contaminated Land Group and a member of the SiLC Professional Panel.
