Buro Happold contributes to Galeri Caernarfon success
Buro Happold is delighted to have supported Richard Murphy Architects on the Galeri Caernarfon project which stole the show at the Scottish Design Awards on the 26 May 2006, by winning both the Best Building for Public Use category and the Scottish Design Grand Prix Award.
The £7m Galeri Caernarfon was designed by Richard Murphy Architects of Edinburgh, while Glasgow based consulting engineers Buro Happold provided the building services engineering. The building was completed in 2005 for the client, Cwmni Tref Caernarfon.
This dock-side development in historic Caernarfon, immediately adjacent to the marina, overlooks the beautiful Menai Straits with views of the island of Anglesey. This new build four storey project has substantially contributed to the development of the arts and creative industries in North Wales and has initiated the quay-side re-development programme now underway in Caernarfon.
The centre includes a 400 seat theatre/cinema, an arts exhibition area, workspaces, rehearsal rooms, recording studios, retail facilities and a café bar and restaurant. In response to the project brief, a retractable seating solution within the auditorium was developed in order to maximise the flexibility of the space for multi-usage.
Environmentally, the auditorium utilises the principal of displacement ventilation to condition the space. Natural ventilation techniques are adopted in the perimeter offices to satisfy occupant fresh air requirements. Due to the harsh costal environment, all air-handling plant was specified with enhanced corrosion protection.
Rod Manson, a Partner at Buro Happold, remarks: “The team is delighted to win this award since the project demonstrates best practice in the integration of architecture and engineering as well as the best in Scottish building design. This is an excellent achievement for a most challenging and rewarding project”.
