Buro Happold Strengthens Partnership

Buro Happold chairman, Rod Macdonald, announces that Alan Harbinson and David Herd have accepted invitations to become Partners of the practice, with effect from 1 May, 2005.

The appointment of Alan Harbinson, who directs the Bath Infrastructure Transport and Environment group, to the Partnership emphasises the importance that the practice management now attaches to its civil engineering enterprise. With fellow ITE Partner, Andrew Comer, Alan will represent the views of the infrastructure team at management level in a strategic move intended to drive its growth over the coming five years.

Alan joined Buro Happold in 1992 bringing a wide variety of civil engineering experience to the practice. When Buro Happold reorganised its civil engineering group in 1994, Alan played a key part supporting Andrew Comer in his task of growing this team. He rose to become group director of ITE Bath which, over the past five years, he has successfully grown and now leads a team of 35 staff covering a number of disciplines run by individual group managers. The Bath ITE team consists of three groups: infrastructure; highways and transportation; rivers and coastal and has significant experience of using these disciplines to provide master planning advice and deliver detailed designs of large building and infrastructure projects both within the UK and overseas.

In addition to providing strategic direction for Bath ITE he is also currently responsible for developing the practice’s environmental capability and also provides substantial support for many of the practice’s international offices.

David Herd, who jointly directs one of the Bath Integrated Building Groups (IBG) with Partner, Paul Westbury, comes from a building services background. He joined Buro Happold in 1999 and since then has been involved in a number of high profile projects including Arsenal Stadium, Wessex Water HQ, National Library of Singapore, Birmingham Hippodrome, Rolls Royce and Eden. Operating under the strategic guidance of Gavin Thompson, David played a major part in growing the Bath studio from 27 to 70 prior to the creation of IBGs. He was promoted to group director in 2001 and led Bath IBG2 from May 2003 to November 2004, at which point he moved to the IBG1 building services team.

Chairman, Rod Macdonald welcomes their decision to join the Partnership, commenting: “The addition of their combined skills and experience serves to strengthen Buro Happold as a practice and reinforce the excellence of our multi-disciplinary consultancy.”
